I know I should have posted this yesterday, but some of us were still recuperating from the annual festival madness.
Wednesday night was another great evening for the program. Once again we had a packed house. Judges Toby Shimin, Andrew Jupin, and Sean Weiner did a terrific job, giving careful consideration to all the films selected as finalists this year, as well as offering insightful comments on the films and useful advice to the filmmakers. This year we had over 40 films submitted for consideration. We selected and screened 19 finalists. You can check out this year's program and trailer here (thanks to Rob Turkin for pulling the trailer together at the last minute on Tuesday night). Jon Leyton and Ryan Oquendo had big nights, taking home two awards each. And Kat Fornos walked away with a Best Performance award for a second year in a row. Monica Perez also won an award for a second year in a row, this time for her creative sound design in Pretty Daisy. This years winners were: Best Fiction Film - Elysian Fields, Jon Leyton Best Documentary Film - Passion, Ryan Oquendo Best Self-Portrait Film - Black and White, Steven Batchey-Portnoy Best Cinematography - Freak and Geeks, Marcus Johnson and Ryan Oquendo Best Editing - Elysian Fields, Jon Leyton Best Sound - Pretty Daisy, Monica Perez Best Performance - Kat Fornos in Conflicted Congratulations to all the filmmakers who submitted, to all those selected as finalists, and to the winners. We'll see you all at WCCFF 2018. Peace. Craig & Jenny

So the morning after this year's film festival, I stumbled upon an old Film Club piece from 2012, on Youtube. It's a short film that never appeared in any of the festivals and, to my knowledge, was never submitted. But it's a great example of early Film Club gonzo style--and a dark and hilarious commentary on "the performance of masculinity" taken to its absurd extreme. Here it is, starring old favorites Manuel Galan, Ryan Murnane, Taje Champagnie, and Alexander Friedman. Enjoy! |
